AS16: Do Atheists Read the Bible Too Literally? (Part 2)

Thomas finishes up the article on reading the bible as a progressive Christian.  Also, should we be happy that Fred Phelps is dying?

  1. I don’t understand how you can claim a book is the perfect word “inspired by” a supreme creator, but you can just turn the shitty parts upside down and etch-a-sketch them away. This article is a perfect argument for atheism: replacing backwards, Iron Age barbarism with modern secular thought just shows that the book your reading is backward and barbaric. No one is making excuses for Beowulf, or reimagining him as suddenly pro-Grendal. The problem is that they want to play the bullshit parts off like literature, and the parts they like as sacred. Don’t tell me the bible is the inerrant word of god, and I won’t insist that you worship Mark Twain.

    1. Rick, no where in the article did I state that the Bible is “perfect” nor did I state that it is “the inerrant word of God.” You’re putting words in my mouth that I didn’t say and creating a strawman that you are then attacking.

      1. Hey Roger, I sent you an email but I just wanted to make sure you got it. Do you want to come on the show and talk about your article? atheisticallyspeaking at gmail.

  2. thanks for the episode, i enjoyed listening to you go over this article. however i do wish you hadn’t cut the segment into two parts! i was really getting into it and following along during last week’s episode, but then it was abruptly cut and now a week later i’ve forgotten the context, i can’t remember the points you previously made, etc… i just feel kind of lost and not nearly as enthusiastic about listening to the rest. (not a huge deal but i imagine other listeners may experience this too! thanks again!)

    1. Well it’s a little unfair to say “last week’s episode”. It was Monday’s episode and then I posted part 2 on Thursday. But I do know what you mean. I just don’t want each episode to go on forever so it seemed best for the format to split it in half. Sorry it put you off a bit. Hopefully future cuts will be smoother. Thanks for listening though!
