AS177: Tyler Vela on Interpreting the Bible

I’ve got a great episode for you, but first, I want to inform anyone who hasn’t heard about the Patreon hack. I explain in the first 5 minutes. Here’s a url you can use to see if you are affected: https://haveibeenpwned.com/

Alright, now that that’s over with.. Tyler Vela joins us this week because he is a Christian who thinks I and others are interpreting the bible incorrectly. Are my biblical criticisms valid or are they due to a lack of understanding of hermeneutics? Find out!

  1. The reason the modern church doesn’t share the assumption that the bible would be written in a way that the average person would understand is because it needs to distance itself from all the crap contained therein by reinterpreting it. No no no, the earth isn’t really 6000 years old, it doesn’t literally have 4 corners, there wasn’t actually a global flood, Noah didn’t literally have 2 of every animal on the arc… and so on, and on, and on. Hermeneutics where religious texts is concerned is largely about whitewashing the things most modern people recognize as bullshit.

    1. I should have said Hermeneutics where religious texts are concerned WHEN DONE BY RELIGIOUS APOLOGISTS is largely about whitewashing the things most modern people recognize as bullshit.

  2. Just a little into the podcast so far, but heard the guest mention ‘atheist fundamentalists’ twice, so I have the strong impression that he is a jackass.
